Dorm life getting monotonous?  New to the area and don’t know many people?  Well, you’re in luck.  A fun-packed program that offers opportunities for single or unaccompanied Airmen to meet new people, travel to interesting places, and take part in community service is ramping up at the 70th Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance Wing.

Called the Better Opportunities for Single Servicemen (BOSS), the program was developed by the Army to emphasize recreation for single service members.  From small social events, such as bowling and barbecues, to weekend trips to Ocean City, Md., and Boston, Mass., Wing members can take advantage of the numerous events offered throughout the year.

Recently, 30 service members enjoyed a BOSS funded, two-night stay in Ocean City, Md.

“Members from all branches had a blast getting to know each other, enjoying the beach and nightlife,” said Army Specialist Kiyanna Hamamura, Fort Meade BOSS president.  Upcoming events include VIP attendance to the July 4th celebration at the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., and on July 15 a free white water rafting trip down the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers in Knoxville, Md.

In addition to recreational activities, the BOSS program encompasses quality of life, which includes resolving dormitory issues; community service, which focuses on volunteer opportunities; and life skills, which includes a myriad of events related fitness, finance, cooking, auto maintenance, and much more.

“Our first life skills class was ‘Paint with BOSS,’ which consisted of a three-night, instructor-led painting class at Club Meade," said Hamamura.  “We had a great turnout and even had to bring in extra tables and chairs on the last night.”

Hamamura hopes that 70th ISR Wing Airmen get involved and take advantage of the program.

“Those who have taken the plunge have had a great time,” she said.  “The main thing I hear is ‘I wish I heard about this sooner’ or ‘I wish more people knew about this.'"
