Many Airmen in the U.S. Air Force work hard, day-in and day-out, fulfilling the mission and striving for excellence. Sometimes, that work culminates in recognition and those members are honored with awards for the efforts they put into their job. An Airman at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, had the pleasure of receiving such an honor.

Senior Master Sgt. Christopher A. Haney, 1st Maintenance Squadron assistant squadron superintendent, earned one of the Air Force’s 12 Outstanding Airmen of the Year awards, on June 17, 2020.

Haney was initially nominated Senior Noncommissioned Officer of the Year while working within the 52nd Maintenance Squadron at Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany. Following this, Haney eventually competed at the Headquarters U.S. Air Force level against Airmen from across the entire Air Force before receiving one of the 12 OAY awards.

“I felt ecstatic about the win,” Haney said. “It is still setting into my mind, but I am proud to be a part of this elite group of fantastic Airmen.”

Although Haney just arrived at JBLE in January, he’s trying to make as big of an impact as he can within the 1st Fighter Wing, using his assistant superintendent position to mentor other SNCOs.

“In my position I don’t get to interact with Airmen as much as flight or section SNCOs and frontline supervisors, so I can make the biggest difference mentoring SNCOs and key NCOs on ways to better lead our Airmen,” Haney said. “I strive to give everyone the most useful tool in the world for leading any shop, which is time.”

As a mentor, Haney has advice to help the younger Airmen in the Air Force with their future careers. According to Haney, Airmen should strive to be great at their jobs and tackle challenges head on.

“Get involved in squadron, group and wing events so you can challenge yourself with an unfamiliar project while learning to network with folks from other agencies,” said Haney. “Always seek out ways to take care of your fellow Airmen and be a great follower.”

The JBLE family congratulates Senior Master Sgt. Haney on this achievement. This award is a testament to your service and outstanding career in the Air Force.
