  • September is Suicide Prevention Month

    Approximately 42,000 Americans commit suicide annually, according to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. September is National Suicide Prevention Month, in which the Defense Department and other organizations are raising awareness to help those in need. Currently the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S., suicide can affect anyone in the community.
  • William Dunn; America’s first WWII ace

    William Dunn, American pilot with the British Royal Air Force Squadron 71, became the first American ace of World War II. While assigned to the RAF Dunn shot down his fifth German aircraft during a fight becoming the first American ace of World War II. On Sept. 29, 1942, a year after Dunn left the Eagles, the No. 71 Squadron was transferred from the RAF to the Army Air Corps and became the 334th Fighter Squadron within the 4th Fighter Group (now the 4th Fighter Wing). The 334th FS recently honored its heritage with a memorial dedication ceremony, July 8, 2016, dedicated to Dunn and his fellow comrades of the No. 71 (Eagle) Squadron. Members of Dunn’s family attended the unveiling and donated one of Dunn’s RAF uniforms to the 334th FS.
  • Team Seymour celebrates Women’s Equality Day

    A nationally recognized day is being celebrated here, Aug. 18-26. Women’s Equality Day is commemorated each year in the U.S. to recognize women’s strides toward gender equality. In honor of this day, Seymour Johnson is displaying posters throughout the base, showing free movies Aug. 18, 22 and 24 about women empowerment (A League of Their Own, Hunger Games and Brave) at the base theater and is having a Battle of the Belles fitness competition Aug. 26.
  • Langley hosts Shine award ceremony

    Pilots from across the U.S. Air Force gathered for the 2015 Lt. Col. Anthony C. Shine Fighter Pilot Award ceremony at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia, Aug. 11, 2016. The award is presented annually to recognize an exceptional U.S. Air Force fighter pilot who has proven excellence and professionalism in flight, as well as dedication to community service.
  • DM Airmen assist in highway rescue

    High winds and dust whipped the uniforms of two Airmen as they attempted to rescue a woman trapped in the cab of her semitractor-trailer. One of them applied his might to the piece of metal that kept the woman confined to her vehicle and the other held the door of the vehicle while trying to guide her down the steps of its cab toward safety. The next instant, just as the woman was reaching the threshold, something came crashing into the rear end of her vehicle at high speed. The two Airmen were thrown ten feet from the vehicle by the impact and as soon as they finished a quick buddy check, they raced back to continue helping the woman in distress.
  • Laid to rest: Fighter pilot remains found 72 years later

    Seventy-two years ago, an Army Air Forces P-38 Lightning pilot from the 27th Fighter Squadron departed Foggia Airfield, Italy, on a strafing mission and never returned. After several attempts to locate the missing pilot, the remains of 1st Lt. Robert L. McIntosh have finally been found and were laid to rest in his hometown of Tipton, Indiana, Aug. 13, 2016.
  • Intent to apply for AF enlisted medical degree preparatory program due Oct. 7

    Eligible enlisted Air Force Reserve, Air National Guard and active-duty Airmen interested in pursuing a medical degree must submit their intent to apply email by Oct. 7 and complete their application for the Enlisted to Medical Degree Preparatory Program by Dec. 9, Air Force Personnel Center officials said.
  • RSAF celebrates National Day

    Republic of Singapore and U.S. Air Force members gathered to celebrate Singaporean National Day here Aug. 5. The celebration featured food, performances and military honors celebrating the 51st anniversary of Singapore's independence.
  • 20th FW Airmen slide into sports day

    Airmen assigned to the 20th Fighter Wing jumped into a morning of sports and wingmanship during a Comprehensive Airman Fitness and sports day at Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina, Aug. 10. The CAF sports day gave Airmen the opportunity to recover from the unit effectiveness inspection that began Aug. 1 and concluded Aug. 5.
  • Airman Up! recognizes civil service

    Laura Jones, 20th Logistics Readiness Squadron logistics readiness technician, was nominated by her leadership for the Airman Up! award, which highlights her personal development as well as assistance to the Airmen of the unit.
