Patient access to care is a priority in military medicine; however, there are some military-wide obstacles to reaching patient access goals. Some consistent challenges to patient access are meeting health care personnel deployment requirements, permanent change of station cycles and recruiting physicians to remote military treatment facilities.

National Nutrition Month is an educational campaign designed to emphasize the importance of healthy eating habits and is recognized in the month of March at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va. This year’s campaign theme is ‘Put Your Best Fork Forward,’ which encourages individuals to start with small changes in eating habits. Nutritionists at JBLE suggest incorporating a variety of healthy foods into your diet to find what you enjoy the most. The 733rd Logistics Readiness Squadron Vehicle Management Flight was chosen to participate in a 12-month long experimental testing of a new bio-based grease to lessen the base's impact on the environment. The 441st Vehicle Support Chain Operations Squadron and representatives from the Defense Logistics Agency briefed the vehicle management flight about the impact of the bio-based grease on the three vehicles chosen to test the grease Jan. 31.

Volunteers helped the 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron relocate pollinator plants from the Bethel Park Pollinator Garden to the nature trail on Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia. Once an old dumping ground, the pollinator garden was installed at Bethel Park in 2014 in accordance with the National Public Lands Day project to help clean up the area. The garden plants provided food or habitat for pollinator organisms such as hummingbirds, bees, butterflies, and occasionally small mammals. A grant from the National Environmental Education Foundation and the Department of Defense Legacy Resource Management Program awarded funds to 633rd CES personnel to plant a garden, however, due to the location of the garden, it has been underutilized by the public and overgrown with weeds.

Developed in the mid 1990’s by the NASA Geographic Information System office, the Flood Impact Analysis Tool illustrates the effects of localized tidal storm flooding. Through a partnership with NASA, the 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron at Langley Air Force Base benefits from the multi-functioning tool, which arrived to the base in 2006.
