When the phone rings and lives are on the line, rescue Airmen understand that at a moment’s notice they need to be in the air and prepared to do the mission. On Aug. 19 that call came. Within 13 hours an HC-130J Combat King II from the 79th Rescue Squadron and a pararescue team from the 48th Rescue Squadron, both 23d Wing geographically separated units at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz., were airborne. Two hours and more than 600 miles later, the new J-model was on scene. With fuel efficiency and longer loiter to extending the rescue team’s abilities, the J-model allowed the crew to provide medical support to a male on board a Greek shipping vessel, and air refueling to two HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopters from Moffutt Federal Airfield, Calif.

High winds and dust whipped the uniforms of two Airmen as they attempted to rescue a woman trapped in the cab of her semitractor-trailer. One of them applied his might to the piece of metal that kept the woman confined to her vehicle and the other held the door of the vehicle while trying to guide her down the steps of its cab toward safety. The next instant, just as the woman was reaching the threshold, something came crashing into the rear end of her vehicle at high speed. The two Airmen were thrown ten feet from the vehicle by the impact and as soon as they finished a quick buddy check, they raced back to continue helping the woman in distress.
