AFTAC relocates RTGs

Three radioisotope thermoelectric generators belonging to the Air Force Technical Applications Center, Patrick AFB, Fla., are downloaded from an Air Force C-17 Globemaster III onto a 25K loader at Creech AFB, Nevada, July 24, 2015 in preparation for transport to the Nevada National Security Site. The RTGs, which contain nuclear material, were transported from Burnt Mountain, Alaska after being decommissioned as a power source. By regulation, radioactive material determined to be excess must be moved to a facility with a mission, capability and authorization to support long-term storage or recycling of the material.
