Air Combat Command Moments

Col. Brian Laidlaw, 325th Fighter Wing commander, and Brig. Gen. Patrice Melancon, Tyndall Program Management Office executive director, discuss how Tyndall Air Force Base will use supplemental funds from Congress to rebuild the base after Hurricane Michael.
Not all Airmen are fighter pilots. In fact, most aren’t. A lot of the men and women supporting the Air Force mission may never touch an aircraft. They aren’t what most people would think of as heroes. And they would never call themselves that. But when their fellow Airmen need someone to go above and beyond… We’ll say it for them: they’re heroes.
Airmen deployed from the active duty 388th and Reserve 419th Fighter Wings at Hill Air Force Base, Utah, recently wrapped up the U.S. Air Force F-35A Lightning IIs first participation in a large, European air-and-missile defense exercise. The focus of the multi-national exercise, Astral Knight 2019, was to defend several key areas of terrain from cruise-missile and aircraft strikes.
U.S. Airmen assigned to the 340th Expeditionary Air Refueling Squadron refuel F-16 Fighting Falcons and A-10 Thunderbolt IIs from a KC-135 Stratotanker out of Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan, May 17, 2019. The 340th EARS is primarily made up of Air National Guard personnel and conducts approximately 5,000 annual refuelings, contributing to more than 3,000 strikes from coalition airpower. Female flight equipment is on its way through a major overhaul. The biggest change coming to the equipment, it is being designed with measurements from female aviators. Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, held a Female Fitment Event June 4, 2019, where U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy female aviators gathered to have their measurements taken which will be used to design new prototypes for female flight equipment.
Gunsmoke Competition at Nellis AFB, why we do it.
The commander of Air Combat Command, Gen. Mike Holmes, has officially selected the officers who will be joining the United States Air Force Thunderbirds for the 2020 demonstration season.
We’re Air Force pilots, air battle managers, and weapon systems officers. Every day we put our lives on the line defending our airspace and training the next generation of pilots. But we do so with the confidence that our preparation, our experience, and the bond we share makes the U.S. Air Force second to none in the world.
Weather can be an unrelenting force and infamously fickle. Severe weather can adversely affect the safety of aircrew and Airmen working in the elements. Fortunately, advanced radars with weather forecasting capabilities can mitigate the associated risks. Keeping constant surveillance on weather patterns and their potential hazards is an important step in enhancing readiness and safety of Airmen. Until recently, this often proved to be a challenge when local radars needed to undergo routine maintenance or upgrades. Mountain Home Air Force Base is the first to show how Portable Doppler Radars (PDRs) can be used to support continental United States (CONUS) operations to fix this problem.

U.S. Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David L. Goldfein presented the 48th Rescue Squadron, Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz., with the Jolly Green Rescue Mission of the Year award. While assigned to the 435th Air Expeditionary Wing, Camp Lemonnier Republic of Djibouti, Africa, Cole’s team received a request to preposition to a forward operating base. There they waited to provide medical support to U.S. Army Special Forces who were sent out to advise and assist local partner forces.
