Team Shaw participated in an Operation Palmetto Employment event, March 12.

OPE, which occurs annually, is a mass briefing designed to provide local business leaders, Army and Air National Guard as well as reserve members with the opportunity to speak with active duty military members and help them seek future job opportunities.

According to www.dew.sc.gov, the initiative was launched by Nikki Haley, South Carolina governor, and supported by the S.C. National Guard and the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce. All involved state they are committed to helping service members, families and veterans find civilian careers.

Throughout the event, guard and reserve members, and local business leaders, received numerous briefing at the 20th Force Support Squadron Carolina Skies Club, a tour of the ARCENT headquarters, an airfield tour and Air Combat Command F-16 Viper Demonstration Team performance.

“The highlight of the event would have to be seeing the tools of the trade,” said John Timmons, South Carolina Department of Social Services program manager. “It’s phenomenal to see the work that our service members are putting in here on the base.

As the event reached its conclusion, local business leaders learned about the various missions at Shaw and found ways to properly communicate and give back to those seeking to work in the civilian sector.

“The least we could do is reciprocate and help you secure employment in a timely fashion.” said Timmons. “It’s a treasure to network with the folks here, we love working with you guys and are vested in helping those needing to get civilian jobs.”
