    Weather Wing Targets Elsa

    The 557th Weather Wing, the Air Force’s only wing of its kind, marshalled significant capabilities to track and predict the behavior of Hurricane Elsa as it formed in the Atlantic Ocean. Even before the system strengthened into a named storm, the wing had armed commanders in the Southeastern United States with forecasts of when and where the storm might strike, as well as possible impacts to operations. The wing accelerated change ahead of the 2021 hurricane season to ensure commanders at all echelons have access to the information they need for decision superiority.

    The skies roared with the sounds of U.S. Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons. Sounds that are not usually heard in a small mountain community in South America. Far from home and familiar territory, Airmen from all over the United States journeyed to Colombia and transformed a contingency location to conduct theatre training as well as joint, coalition and partnered missions during the course of a major international exercise.

    MQ-9 Agile Combat Employment: A Big Step Closer to Reality

    The 556th Test and Evaluation Squadron proved the MQ-9 Reaper’s Automatic Takeoff and Landing Capability (ATLC) is ready as of July 8, 2021, enabling crews to divert to airfields without traditional launch and recovery infrastructure or personnel. This capability is a key enabler for MQ-9 Agile Combat Employment and, combined with the MQ-9’s next software upgrade and receipt of the portable aircraft control station, will change how it will be employed in theaters worldwide.

    For some people leaving work is the end of their duty day. No more thinking about work, just enjoying their time off. For Staff Sgt. Jon Paul Fitzgerald, 336th Fighter Squadron independent duty medical technician, or IDMT, that was not the case.

    388th Munitions Squadron begins new familiarization training regimen

    The 388th Munitions Squadron began a new training regimen recently encompassing each of their twelve different sections. Starting in the precision guided munitions section, Airmen from one of the other ten sections in the squadron received familiarization training on the Guided Bomb Unit-39 small diameter bomb. The training covered proper loading and unloading techniques on the GBU/39, and its bomb rack, the BRU-61. The plan is to incorporate each different munitions section into the training to create multi-capable Airmen.

    New era for Multi-Domain Test Force

    The Air Force Test Center ushered in a new era of the Multi-Domain Test Force, appointing its first military commander, Lt. Col. David Levene, at the AFTC Detachment 1 Assumption of Command ceremony July 9. The MDTF will take residence here, with future employees set to additionally operate at Edwards AFB, California and Eglin AFB, Florida. “The need for a test environment to support joint, all-domain, warfighting has been recognized for years, but left to the innovative airmen in our test squadrons to create for themselves...until the standup of the MDTF,” said Maj. Gen. Christopher Azzano, AFTC commander.

    USAFA Cadet Summer Program returns to Tyndall AFB

    After a year-long hiatus due to COVID-19, the U.S. Air Force Academy Cadet Summer Program recently returned to the Air Force Civil Engineer Center’s Readiness Laboratory here. The month-long annual research program is an opportunity for second and third-year cadets to experience Air Force life and some of the responsibilities and challenges that await them after graduation. This year USAFA and AFCEC chose two project topics with cadets able to focus on one or work across both. The first project focused on developing a sampling methodology for Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, and finding potential solutions to naturally remove and break down the complex, synthetic chemicals in water. The second project explored using bacteria to treat runways and prevent erosion and dust.
