    Innovation at its finest

    The Air Force looks to its Airmen to be innovative in order to save time and money. Staff Sgt. Justin Tankersley, 20th Maintenance Group weapons lead crew chief, created a new tool for F-16 Fighting Falcons.

    25th Attack Group activated at Shaw

    U.S. Air Force history was made at Shaw AFB when the 25th Attack Group was activated Oct. 2. The bedding down of the group at Shaw will provide MQ-9 Reaper crews the ability to train outside of combat missions, provide a new location for Airmen to live and having the increased population with the group will give them a greater voice in the remotely piloted aircraft command.

    AFCENT command and control operations weather the storm

    Airmen of the 609th AOC Det. 1 support real-world command and control operations everyday with AFCENT’s forward headquarters at Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar. Whether it’s ensuring the Combined Air Operations Center maintains resiliency in the face of any attack or situation, or planning hundreds of daily air mobility missions, this partnership between the Airmen in Qatar and the U.S. is essential to a new model of C2 operations. As a violent force approached, the Airmen dug in to repel the force. It was just like an attack, but this one came from nature.

    Recognizing 71 years of mission success

    In 1947, the Cold War was in full swing, leading to the U.S.’s need for a more efficient and manageable foreign policy-making establishment. As a solution, President Harry Truman signed the National Security Act of 1947 on Sept. 18, 1947. This act, among other authorizations, separated the U.S. Army Air Corps from the U.S. Army, thus creating the U.S. Air Force.

    We will never forget

    Thousands of Americans stood helpless as they watched the streets of New York City fill with smoke and turn to chaos. Planes crashed into the twin towers, the pentagon and in Stony Creek Township, Pa. and 9/11 quickly became one of the worst terrorist attacks in U.S. history. Although many of today’s Airmen were not in the military during this time, there are still some who were enlisted during this tragic time. Some even had family in New York at the time of the attack.

    New PT program aimed to help new moms

    After carrying a child for approximately 270 days, the average woman gains 25 to 35 pounds, which can be difficult to lose. Some new moms may find getting back into their pre-baby shape or even making time for a fitness routine challenging. Two Team Shaw Airmen devised the Pregnancy & Post-Partum Fitness Program to assist women who are either pregnant or within the first 12 months of post-partum with staying fit to fight. The program helps prepare mothers for their first fitness assessment after giving birth. The pilot program has been approved and funded by the 363rd Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance Wing Leading Innovation and Opportunity Now Board, and is slated to begin Fall of 2018.

    Load crews train for deployment operations

    Imagine mission success laying on the shoulders of the individuals to your right and left. For one team of Airmen, the shortcomings of one can be catastrophic to the task at hand. These groups of professionals assigned to the 20th Maintenance Group, spanning three fighter squadrons, work in unison to ensure the job is completed efficiently.
  • Career assistance advisors (CAA) provide service members with professional development and personalized counseling, and have developed a Commissioning Mentorship Panel allowing enlisted Airmen the opportunity to speak with officers who were once enlisted.

    Enhancing careers one Airman at a time

    The 20th Force Support Squadron career assistance advisors serve the local populace as well as Team Shaw’s geographically separated unit personnel in 29 states and five countries. Fostering the force development for more than one thousand Airmen is no easy task, but it is accomplished every day by two Airmen at Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina.
