    AF Rolls Out Beta Test to Help Meet Airmen's Wellness Needs

    Task Force True North (TFTN) is a Vice Chief of Staff of the Air Force-chartered effort to enhance Airman and family well-being, increase resilience, and decrease negative outcomes (suicide, sexual assault, domestic violence and workplace violence). The Task Force underscores the Air Force’s commitment to the health, safety, and well-being of every Airman and their family members so they thrive in both their personal and professional lives. Inspired by United States Special Operations Command’s Preservation of the Force and Family Program, TFTN begins its three-year beta test this summer at Whiteman AFB, Minot AFB, Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, and Beale AFB.

    99th MDG: The backbone of DoD spine surgery

    As one of the more limited Air Force Medical Service specialties, orthopedic spine surgery has only three authorized surgeons in the entire Department of Defense, two of whom are now on the team at Nellis Air Force Base. The 99th Medical Group successfully completed its first set of orthopedic spine surgeries after bringing two highly-specialized spine surgeons to the unit August 20.

    One thing Airmen worry about when they deploy is the well-being of their family, especially children who may have a hard time coping with the challenges that come with a parent’s deployment. The impact of deployment on children is a key component of Airmen readiness. Knowing their family is well helps Airmen focus on the mission.

    Honoring our roots: Offutt family returns

    On Aug. 13, 2018, one hundred years, to the day of his passing, generations of Lt. Jarvis Offutt decedents gathered around his grave, white roses in hand. In their company were members of the 55th Wing, who call Offutt Air Force Base home, members of the Royal Air Force 56 Squadron, the unit Lt. Offutt perished serving, and many others who wished to share in honoring his legacy. At the culmination of a wreath laying ceremony by allied countries, 56 Squadron Leader David Hockley, took a minute to recite a stanza from Laurence Binyon’s poem, “For the Fallen.”
  • The Youth Center hosted the Micron STEM Bus tour with different stations set up for students to explore different aspects of science, technology, engineering and math.

    STEM bus brings science to life at Mountain Home AFB

    The base Youth Center partnered with the Micron STEM Bus to bring the world of science, technology, engineering and math to base children. STEM is an area of focus that looks to prepare children for educational opportunities in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The STEM Bus provided the Youth Center a new way to bring the knowledge and excitement of those four fields to students.
  • The new policy states that Airmen are authorized to purchase and wear a long or short sleeve breastfeeding t-shirt with their utility uniform.

    Nursing in uniform made easy

    As the military continues to adapt to women in service, it is also making changes for mothers. Air Force mothers who choose to breastfeed their bundles of joy can wear Air Force Instruction approved undershirts in their Airman Battle Uniform or Operational Camouflage Pattern uniform.

  • Royal Canadian Air Force 1st Lt. Ervin David Shaw, 48th Squadron Bristol F2B Brisfit pilot, is the namesake of Shaw Air Force Base, S.C., located approximately 11 miles from his hometown of Sumter, S.C.

    Lt. Shaw: 100 years later

    Long before the plot of land that is now Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina, became a pre-World War II auxillary air field, its namesake departed for a mission into the hostile German sky, never to return to his family.
