Residents here can be at ease knowing the 7th Security Forces Squadron and civilian police officers patrol the streets night and day.

During the summer months, people might notice officers not in their cars, but on bikes, keeping Dyess safe.

From May to September, officers in groups of two ride throughout Dyess assisting with situations that may occur.

"We mainly stay in the neighborhood," said Officer Luis Ortega, 7th SFS. "We're on call basically all day and night for any problems on base, loose animals, any assistance the community needs, we're at their service."

"On an average day we ride between 20 and 25 miles," said Officer James Sparrow, 7th SFS. "A couple of days ago, Senior Airman Morgan and I rode 40 miles each. This is good for security forces because they save money, it doesn't cost fuel to ride these bikes."

Dyess base housing has paths that patrol cars aren't able to navigate, but the bike patrol is able to ensure they're secured. The patrols not only keep the neighborhoods safe, they also help build rapport with residents.

"It's a great opportunity to do something different," Sparrow said. "My favorite part of being on the bike patrol is establishing a relationship with the community. It's always nice to see when you're going down Maryland Street or New York Street and someone says 'hi Officer Sparrow, hi Officer Ortega,' it brings a smile to my face."
