Augmentees from the 4th Security Forces Squadron at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, N.C., willingly took a face full of pepper spray Feb. 17. According to Air Force Manual 31-222, security forces personnel and augmentees must experience the effect of pepper spray before they can carry it. Pepper spray, also known as OC spray, is a non-lethal weapon used to diffuse violent situations. When pepper spray makes contact with the eyes it causes irritation, tears, pain and temporary blindness. The effects of pepper spray last approximately 30 to 60 minutes.
