Air Force officials announced June 16 that the Continental U.S. North American Aerospace Defense Command Region - 1st Air Force (Air Forces Northern) will be getting a new commander at its helm.

Maj. Gen. Stanley E. Clarke III, who has been selected for promotion to lieutenant general, will assume responsibility of the Component Numbered Air Force at Tyndall Aug. 31. Clarke is currently serving as the Senior Defense Official and Defense Attaché for United States European Command in Ankara, Turkey. He is a command pilot with more than 4,000 hours in the A-10, C-26 and F-16, including more than 100 combat hours.

Current CONR-1st AF (AFNORTH) commander, Maj. Gen. Garry C. Dean, took command of the CNAF in November 2009. Information about his assignment has not yet been released.

Clarke's assumption of command will mark the first time in Tyndall Air Force Base history that a three-star general has occupied a senior leadership position with any organization on base.
