Heart Link strives to help Nellis military spouses Published Jan. 21, 2011 By 2nd Lt. Laura Balch Nellis Public Affairs NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. -- The Airman and Family Readiness Center at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., will be hosting its first Heart Link event of 2011 on Feb. 17. Heart Link is a one-day program designed to inform military spouses about military life. "The best way to describe this program is 'Air Force 101 for spouses,'" said Wayne Ojala, 99th Force Support Squadron A&FRC community readiness consultant. "Our main goal is to educate spouses so that when they walk away, they know what the Nellis mission is and how we all fit into the big Air Force picture." During Heart Link, spouses receive briefings from various organizations on base, which help them become familiar with the many helping agencies available at Nellis. Some of these organizations include: the chapel, Health and Wellness Center, Family Advocacy, commissary, Military Family Life Consultants, and the installation commander or representative. Also during Heart Link, spouses participate in fun, interactive games and drawings and they receive prizes and gifts. "Another goal of Heart Link is to have spouses meet each other and make new friends," said Kris Heick, 99th Force Support Squadron A&FRC community readiness consultant. "This program helps spouses expand their social circle so they can strengthen their support networks here." Heart Link is geared toward spouses who have been associated with the military for five years or less, but it is open to all military spouses. Heart Link will be held once a quarter. This year, Nellis Heart Link classes will be held on Feb. 17, May 12, Aug. 18, and Nov. 8.
