An Air Combat Command accident investigation board report on the Jan. 21 death of an Airman from the 824th Security Forces Squadron at Moody Air Force Base, Ga., was released Aug. 26.

Senior Airman Chad Rice collapsed and died while running during a practice Army physical fitness test. Based on the accident investigation board report, Airman Rice died from sudden cardiac death likely caused by hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, or an enlarged heart muscle, and an underdeveloped right coronary artery.

Airman Rice was practicing the Army test to satisfy an attendance requirement for a course he was selected to participate in at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. He collapsed after about 1.6 miles of a two-mile run.

Shortly after he collapsed, a bystander stopped to assist and notified personnel in the air traffic control tower, who, in turn, notified emergency response personnel. Other personnel arrived on scene in less than two minutes and began CPR after failing to detect a pulse and determining Airman Rice wasn't breathing.

Emergency medical responders took over the scene about eight to nine minutes after the call to the tower when the ambulance arrived. Airman Rice was transported via ambulance to a hospital about 10 miles from the base. Emergency department specialists at the hospital continued resuscitation efforts without success.
