Servicemembers serving in the theater of operations for Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom are eligible to receive an increased monthly allowance for life insurance deductions.

Section 606 of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal 2007 states that servicemembers will be paid a monthly allowance equal to the deduction of Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance premiums for coverage in effect up to $400,000 for members serving in the theater of operations for OEF or OIF any time during a month.

The Defense Finance and Accounting Service will periodically review pay records to identify servicemembers who are eligible to receive reimbursement. Members who previously elected no coverage will not qualify for this new program unless they request and are approved for increased SGLI coverage.

Prior to implementation of the new act on Nov. 2, 2006, servicemembers received monthly allowances equal to SGLI deductions up to $150,000.

Military personnel flights, in coordination with commander's support staffs, will ensure members who are eligible are briefed regarding the change to the program.

To increase existing SGLI coverage, servicemembers must visit their MPF to complete an SGLV 8285, Request for Insurance, and an SGLV 8286, Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance Election and Certificate. Forms can also be found at www.insurance.va.gov. Upon completion, members must return the forms to the MPF for processing.
