MEDIA CONTEST: A downhill challenge [Willow Lakes Golf Course series pt. 2] Published Dec. 27, 2006 Series Entry 4B ACC MEDIA CONTEST -- Last week the Air Pulse profiled the first hole at Willow Lakes, which our expert Staff Sgt. James Stephens characterized as one of the hardest on the course. This week Sergeant Stephens walks us through the second hole, a more relaxed downhill adventure that won't stress your driver nearly as much. Sergeant Stephens on how to beat the second hole: Hole # 2 is a slight down hill par 4 measuring 380 yards, about 40 yards shorter than Hole #1. With the left side of the hole lined by trees, a drive down the middle to the right side of the fairway is your best bet to avoid leafy interference. This hole has a steeper slope than any other hole on the course, and it's all down hill. If you're not too confident in your driver skills, feel free to leave it in the bag and tee off with a long iron or fairway wood. Don't play it too safe or too far to the right, though; a large fairway bunker on the right side will happily ensnare any balls that come its way. Because this hole is shorter than the other par 4's at Willow Lakes, the course designer, Robert Trent Jones, surrounded the green with three bunkers. The green itself slopes gently from back to front, making it an inviting target for a short approach. Be careful going too long, though - the green drops straight down into a bunker, and your chip shot out of the bunker is likely to get away from you. With its short distance and inviting green, this hole is a good opportunity for a birdie. If you don't make any mistakes, this is a chance to scoot ahead of the competition, especially if Hole #1 got the better of you.
