Officials here named a teen from Whiteman Air Force Base, Mo., the Air Combat Command 2005 Youth of the Year.

Brandon Wielert, 17, son of James, a retired master sergeant and shift supervisor for U.S. Protect, and Teresa Wielert of Warrensburg, Mo., earned accolades for his school, base and community involvement.

Mr. Wielert will receive a $1,500 scholarship from ACC that he can use at the post-secondary school of his choice.

In addition to other accomplishments, Mr. Wielert has participated in youth programs for the last 12 years, including several community service projects, and the Youth Employment Skills Program. He also served as an officer in the Whiteman Training Adolescents in Leadership, or Training Responsible Adolescence in Leadership, group and earned a bronze Congressional Medal award.

After completing high school this year, Mr. Wielert plans to attend Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, Mo., and to continue his education at the University of Missouri. His goal is to complete a doctorate in child psychology.

Base youth centers sponsor the Youth of the Year program in conjunction with the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. Nominees submit a written package and make an oral presentation via video teleconference. A panel of judges from ACC selects the winner.
