Mechanical failure caused the pilot of an A-10 to crash in a military training range near Las Vegas, Nov. 18, according to a report Air Force officials released today.

The pilot ejected safely in the Nevada Test and Training Range about 45 miles northwest of Nellis Air Force Base, Nev. He did not sustain any injuries.

The pilot was flying a training mission as part of the A-10 Weapons Instructor Course curriculum, and was assigned to the 66th Weapons Squadron, 57th Wing, Nellis AFB.

According to an Air Combat Command Accident Investigation Board report released today, the combination of the right engine failing and the inability to retract the speed brakes prevented the pilot from safely recovering the aircraft.

The value of aircraft and equipment lost totaled about $10.3 million. There were no other damages.
