Minot cops capture AF awards Published April 2, 2004 MINOT AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. (ACCNS) -- Only the Best Come North held true as the Air Force announced its 2004 selections for the best security forces units March 27.The 91st Security Forces Group took the best overall Air Force security forces group award while the 5th Security Forces Squadron won service-wide honors as its best large security forces squadron.Base leaders called these awards a testament to the hard work these security forces troops invest throughout the year. This award showcases what the 91st SFG Airmen do on a daily basis, said Col. Mark Owen, 91st Space Wing commander. Just because they dont deploy worldwide doesnt mean their mission isnt as important as those that do. This award proves that.Despite a limited global deployment mission, their deployments to the Minuteman III missile field are enough to keep them busy. They helped boost the highest intercontinental ballistic missile alert rate for Air Force Space Command for 2003, and its patrols responded to more than 4,500 security situations to keep the missiles secure. They instituted a single-key lock system at missile alert and launch facilities to enhance security and response and implemented AFSPCs first security forces helicopter section to improve early intrusion, detection and strike ability.Meanwhile, the 91st SFG vehicle section installed global positioning systems in its security forces vehicles, which improved safety and security. The group also provided security for the distinguished visitors during the three Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty visits as well as developing and implementing a barrier plan to improve security at the wing headquarters. There is no greater calling than service to our nation, said Col. Jimmy McMillian, 91st SFG commander. More importantly, when the 91st Security Forces Group is rewarded for the best service among elite organizations makes all sacrifices worthwhile. The outstanding young men and women of the 91st SFG earned the prestigious award as the Best SFG in the United States Air Force because of undisputed service before self and excellence in action always, the colonel explained. They conquered some difficult situations and stared unfavorable scrutiny in the face. This is without a doubt the most exciting moment in my Air Force career.Senior Airman Monique Harris, 91st Missile Security Forces Squadron, called the groups accomplishments an example of how the Air Forces top cops operate.A lot of times, Airmen think their job doesnt mean anything and no one knows what a great job our security forces members, personnel and information managers do at Minot, she said. By winning this award, [it] shows people we do a great job, everyone plays a part of the mission and are greatly appreciated. On the other side of the security forces complex, the 5th Security Forces Squadron also had reason to celebrate as it beat Kadena Air Base, Japan, for the title this year.Lt. Col. Jim Jeffers, 5th SFS commander, said this award is one of the finest accolades to receive as a unit, but winning is a joint effort between the squadron, base and downtown community. Squadron members are extremely excited and proud to bring the win to Minot, he said. They realize the feat itself is reflective not only of the squadrons efforts, but inherently dependent on Minot Air Force Base and the Minot community coming together to capture this award. In 2003, the 5th SFS was Air Combat Commands most tasked strategic weapons unit, deploying 94 percent of its troops to support Operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom and other contingency operations. Three explosive detection dog teams deployed along with Airmen charged with performing security escort duties.During the year, the squadron established the first memorandum of agreement with the Transportation Security Administration to have military working dogs provide local coverage for Minot International Airport. In the community, they created the first-ever multi-agency domestic violence board and hosted the commanders pistol shoot during police week with 105 state-wide competitors attending. They also maintained security during the annual Northern Neighbors Day air show and allowed more than 6,500 visitors to see the Air Force mission.Senior Airman Ellen Gregoire said the award showcases the mission she does on a daily basis, and she couldnt be more excited to work with such an awesome squadron.Weve been dedicated to our training and work [for the entire year], she said. What an awesome reward to be best in the Air Force.Col. Dan Charchian, 5th Bomb Wing commander, said the 5th SFS worked hard all year and truly deserved this award. The safety and security of our base is paramount and the 5th SFS does an outstanding job to protect us, the wing commander said. They work day-in and day-out, in all types of weather and this award formally recognizes them for a job well done.
