Random Acts of Kindness

"Our Security Forces members are tip of the spear when it comes to Holloman security and too often people forget that. Most people drive through the gate and say "I'm glad I'm not doing that job," when they should say "I'm glad they are doing that job," said Tech Sgt. Dominic Moless, non-commissioned officer in charge of plans and programs and Middle 2 president.

The Holloman Middle 2 functions as a non-profit Non-commissioned Officer professional military organization. They seek to improve morale and promote the general welfare of all enlisted personnel assigned to or visiting Holloman.

"The Middle 2 strives to establish and maintain an attitude of unified camaraderie and esprit de corps, and to encourage and attitude of unified purpose according to the standards, traditions and customs of the United States Air Force," said Tech. Sgt. Mandy Bitson, 9th Attack Squadron intelligence flight chief and Middle 2 vice president.

Together, the Middle 2 organizes various events around base with the sole purpose of boosting morale and increasing the quality of life for Holloman airmen.

"Last quarter, the Middle 2 started a new project called Random Acts of Kindness. It is a way for the NCO tier to step out of the everyday projects and give back to our Holloman community through random acts," said Bitson. "At the monthly Middle 2 meetings, we ask members to submit ideas and last month, during a discussion between the Middle 2 Executive Council, there was a suggestion to focus the second quarter's Random Act of Kindness on the 49th Security Forces Squadron because of how big of a work load they carry."

With the 49th SFS being the focus of this quarter's Random Act of Kindness, the Middle 2 decided they would supply the defenders, who are stuck at the gate or in the office, with quality food and drink.

"We provided the 49th SFS with lunch for the day," said Moless. "We purchased Albertsons sandwiches, chips, beverages and energy drinks. Over $300 was spent in all, funded by the Holloman Middle 2."

Everyone has their own motives when they decide to volunteer their time toward helping others. For Bitson, hers was came from her family history of U.S. Air Force service.

"I come from an Air Force family who are spread throughout six Air Force Specialty Codes (including a Security Forces member) and two who daily support all of us as spouses," said Bitson. "I understand that it takes every member of the military to complete the daily operations and keep out military moving forward. There are shiny star jobs out there and then there are jobs that many people see but don't think too much about. Defenders are one of those jobs. They are out there in the sun, cold, rain, holidays and weekends, and I have heard from some that it is a "thankless job." I hope that this small act of providing lunch to the defenders in some small way shows them that they are appreciated for all that they do, day-in and day-out.

With the Random Acts of Kindness program, the Middle 2 hopes that this trend will catch on with other organizations, units and groups. Moless believes it's crucial and important to recognize people and highlight their impact to the Holloman mission. The Middle 2 plans on doing a different Random Act of Kindness every quarter.
