Nellis remembers POWs, those MIA
William Dean Whitaker, a World War II veteran and former prisoner of war, shares a story with Col. Thomas E. Dempsey III, Nevada Test and Training Range commander, during the Prisoner of War and Missing in Action Recognition Ceremony at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., Sept. 19, 2014. Whitaker, who served in the U.S. Army Air Corps’ 603rd Bomb Squadron as a bombardier and navigator, was completing a mission over Merseburg, Germany when his B-17 was shot down on Nov. 2, 1944, and was subsequently held as a POW for seven months. Whitaker attends Nellis’ POW/MIA Recognition Ceremony every year to pay his respects and honor the legacy of his fallen brothers who were POWs or are still MIA. (U.S. Air Force photo by Staff Sgt.
