7th SFS Airmen assist local law enforcement during bomb threat downtown

DYESS AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- Military working dog handlers from the 7th Security Forces Squadron responded to a bomb threat April 3 in downtown Abilene, Texas.

An individual called the operator at the old Taylor County Courthouse stating a bomb was in the building. Since the Abilene Police Department and the Taylor County Sherriff's Office do not have dogs capable of detecting explosives, they called the 7th SFS for assistance.

"When we arrived on scene we were briefed on the situation and then initiated a search," said Staff Sgt. Daren Marshall, 7th SFS military working dog handler. "We searched all floors of the building, including its entire perimeter as well as the parking lot."

Fortunately, nothing was found and the courthouse resumed occupancy following the search.

"We train for these types of situations," said Staff Sgt. Andre Hernandez, 7th SFS military working dog handler. "Once we received the call, all of our training kicked in."

The 7th SFS worked simultaneously to ensure a speedy response time. Every one played a part in getting to the courthouse as soon as possible.

"One person took the phone call while others listened and got their gear ready," said Staff Sgt. Timothy Castillo, 7th SFS military working dog handler. "We were ready to go by the time the phone conversation ended."

Though the protocols and methods of the Abilene Police Department and the 7th SFS may differ, their community partnership has a strong bond.

"We appreciate the ability to reach out to our partners at Dyess AFB," said Lt. John Cummins, Taylor County Sherriff's Office. "The 7th SFS Airmen and their military working dogs were absolute professionals, and with their help we were able to quickly and safely determine that the bomb threat at the old courthouse was false."

The 7th SFS agrees working alongside the Abilene Police Department contributes to the Team Dyess mission. When the time arises, both local and base personnel are prepared to work together to complete their mission.

"We have a great partnership with the Abilene Police Department and we share each other's resources when in need," Marshall said. "Our working commitment with them helps foster a better community atmosphere to ensure the safety of not only the base but the City of Abilene as well."
