U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Lawrence Wells hands the Air Force flag to Lt. Col. Juris Jansons during the 495th Fighter Group activation ceremony, Shaw Air Force Base, S.C., March 8, 2013. Jansons is the first commander of the group and Wells, who is the 9th Air Force commander, presided over the ceremony. An Air Force flag was used to symbolize the group flag because the unit does not currently have a group shield. The 495th Fighter Group will lead its active associate units into the future of Air Force pilot training. The partnerships will allow active-duty, Air National Guard and Air Reserve Component fighter units to share resources, reduce duplications of effort, and ultimately, increase the Air Force’s overall air defense capabilities.
