A B-29 Superfortress is parked in the aircraft parking area at Royal Air Force Scampton, England. This B-29 was part of several deployed from Ellsworth during the Berlin Airlift in 1948. The B-29s were sent as a deterrent against communist aggression in Germany. While the communist forces significantly outnumbered the Western military units conducting the humanitarian operation, the lethality of U.S. airpower from World War II was still a fresh memory. This deployment helped deter communist aggression and the airlift was successful.
