This undated artist’s rendering depicts mountain man and trailblazer Jedediah Strong Smith, explorer, businessman, and diplomat to the Native American tribes living in the unexplored American West. “Ole Jed”, as he was sometimes called, was attacked by a Grizzly Bear in the Black Hills area in what’s now southwestern S.D. A companion stitched his scalp and ear back to this skull by hand with a bone needle. Jedediah Smith recovered and continued the expedition 10 days later. (courtesy photo)
