Army Patriots protect sister services on ground, in sky

NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. -- Soldiers from the 108th Air Defense Artillery Regiment from Fort Bragg, N.C., highlight the capabilities of the Patriot missile system to Chaplain (Capt.) Steven Barfield, Red Flag Air Expeditionary Wing chaplain from Mountain Home Air Force Base as the team participates in Red Flag 09-3 here Feb. 27. With the capability to identify enemies in the air and protect allies both on the ground and in the sky, the Patriot unit is one of many defensive assets used by coalition forces. The Patriot is a long-range, all-altitude, all-weather defense system used to counter tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and advanced aircraft. Red Flag is a realistic combat training exercise involving the air forces of the United States and its allies. The exercise is conducted on the 15,000-square-mile Nevada Test and Training Range north of Las Vegas. (U.S. Air Force photo/ Airman 1st Class Debbie Lockhart)
