Airmen from the Air Force Technical Applications Center's Detachment 460 at Eielson AFB and Soldiers from B Company, 1-52 Aviation Brigade at Ft. Wainwright – both units near Fairbanks, Alaska – painstakingly lay several yards of modular interlocking surfacing July 17, 2015, to help shore up the ground as the crews transferred two radioisotope thermoelectric generators, or RTGs, via forklift to an awaiting CH-47 Chinook. The RTGs, which contain nuclear material, were originally used as a power source, but were deemed excess when a hybrid power source was developed to operate AFTAC's seismic array.
