Dr. John Bechtoldt, U.S. Air Force Military Auxiliary Radio System volunteer, reviews an informational pamphlet with USAF Tech. Sgt. Eric van Kirk, a 42nd Cyberspace Operations Squadron cyber warfare operator, during the AFMARS 75th anniversary event held at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois, Nov. 6, 2023. One of the key capabilities of MARS is its ability to operate independently of traditional communication infrastructure. In the event of a natural disaster or other large-scale emergency, conventional communication networks are inoperable MARS is able to function through the use of high-frequency radio waves, which can travel vast distances and penetrate various types of terrain and atmospheric conditions.
