    Digital Airport Surveillance Radar identifies, locates aircraft

    Did you know the 23d Wing has a radar system that services the airspace around Moody as well as eight other local airports? The digital airport surveillance radar identifies aircraft up to 240 nautical miles away and transmits their location to radar approach control air traffic controllers, who monitor all aircraft arriving and departing the eight airports as well as aircraft flying through Moody’s airspace.

    Radar survey team uses new innovation for faster surveys

    The Radar Survey section of the 84th Radar Evaluation Squadron at Hill Air Force Base, Utah, recently obtained new technology that revolutionizes how they survey terrain and man-made features. That new technology is a 3-D terrestrial laser scanner called the Riegl VZ-2000i.

    Mountain Home AFB: First to use Portable Doppler Radar for CONUS Ops

    Weather can be an unrelenting force and infamously fickle. Severe weather can adversely affect the safety of aircrew and Airmen working in the elements. Fortunately, advanced radars with weather forecasting capabilities can mitigate the associated risks. Keeping constant surveillance on weather patterns and their potential hazards is an important step in enhancing readiness and safety of Airmen. Until recently, this often proved to be a challenge when local radars needed to undergo routine maintenance or upgrades. Mountain Home Air Force Base is the first to show how Portable Doppler Radars (PDRs) can be used to support continental United States (CONUS) operations to fix this problem.

    While not operating at full capacity, Tyndall’s airfield is functioning by using a complex system of radar and radio data that is being processed and used here and at Eglin Air Force Base. Restoring these capabilities after the storm would not have been possible without the innovative thinking of a few 325th Operations Support Squadron Radar, Airfield and Weather Systems technicians.

    Center awards major long range radar contract

    The contract award covers the engineering and manufacturing development of three production representative units, but allows the ability to exercise options for low-rate production, interim contractor support, and full rate production when appropriate.
