  • Air Combat Command announces 24 and 25 AF merger

    Air Combat Command is merging Twenty Fourth and Twenty Fifth Numbered Air Forces at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas, this summer to better integrate cyber effects, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance operations, electronic warfare operations, and information operations.

    The A-10C Thunderbolt II has been flying Close Air Support missions for more than 40 years and Moody Air Force Base has the Air Force’s largest operational A-10 Fighter Group. Having fully serviced and functional aircraft at all times is critical to overall mission readiness. To guarantee Moody’s fleet of 49 A-10s are in peak warfighting condition, Airmen from the 23d Maintenance Group dedicate over 10 hours washing each A-10 to ensure the aircraft is free of any surface or structural deficiencies that could present a safety hazard during flight.
  • Airmen chart new path for female-specific flight equipment

    The Air Force is working to redesign the gear used by female pilots across the force after facing challenges with current flight equipment. The majority of the equipment currently worn by pilots was built off anthropometric data from the 1960s, a time when only men were in aviator roles. Part of the strategy to correct the uniform problem was to take part in several collaborative Female Flight Equipment Workshops at AFWERX Vegas. Female Airmen stationed across the globe traveled to the innovation hub and attended the workshops to explore areas of opportunity and come up with proposed solutions.

    Preston Kemp, 38th Engineering Squadron cyber engineer, presented the results of an Air Force engineering prototype study to attendees during a Federal Aviation Working Group event, hosted by Apple, Inc., in Austin, Texas, March 13, 2019. The event served as a technical interchange between Department of Defense service members and contractors, commercial vendors, and Apple federal team members.

    "Sir," he said, "we have four jets available." My first reaction was total disbelief mixed with frustration. At the time, we had 24 jets in the squadron and my Pro Super had just informed me that only four out of 24 were mission ready. The remaining 20 jets were non-mission capable. How was this even possible?! I honestly had to ask him to repeat what he had just said. Again, utterly defeated, he calmly and quietly repeated, "Sir, we have four jets."

    As these units defend Department of Defense and Air Force networks, the 567th Cyberspace Operation Group’s hunt exercises continue to evolve operators into disciplined, ready and lethal experts. The 833rd Cyberspace Operations Squadron was declared victorious in the 567th COG’s “hunt exercise” here March 22, 2019. The more realistic we can make our exercises, the better we can prepare our operators to identify adversary tactics,” said Tech. Sgt. Joshua Costello, 92nd COS training flight chief. “This enhances operators’ ability to quickly detect real-world malicious network activity and stop it before it causes any damage.”
  • 2019 USAF Test Pilot School applications due May 29

    Application packages for the 2019 U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School selection board are due by May 29. The board is set to convene at the Air Force’s Personnel Center July 29 through Aug. 2, and will consider Total Force officer and current Air Force civilian applicants to attend training as early as July 2020. Officers may apply to become a test pilot, test combat systems officer or test remotely piloted aircraft pilot. Both officers and civilians interested in flight test engineer positions are encouraged to apply. Applicants from all aircraft types and backgrounds must have strong academic and technical experience.

  • Colombian Air Force supports US Navy Growlers for premier air-to-air combat

    The Colombian Air Force is supporting the U.S. Navy during the U.S. Air Force-led air-to-air combat exercise Red Flag. The Colombian Air Force brought their Multi-Mission Transport Tanker Jupiter 767 to refuel the U.S. Navy’s EA-18G Growlers for the duration of the exercise. The Colombian MMTT Jupiter 767 is the only aircraft capable to conduct air-to-air refueling missions for the Growler during Red Flag 19-2 due to different air-to-air refueling systems available for the exercise.

    The 5th Combat Communications Group, 254th Combat Communications Group, 226th Combat Communications Group, and the 1st Combat Communications Squadron, and leaders from across to cyber spectrum, gathered for the 5th CCG Combat Communications Rodeo, March 7, 2019, at Robins Air Force Base, Georgia. Various combat communications units trained and executed various skills such as installation and sustainment of tactical communications systems, tent set-ups, team tactics, camouflaging equipment, and other skills needed to be mission ready. The Director, Cyberspace Strategy and Policy, Office of Information Dominance with the Office of the Secretary of the Air Force, and Brig. Gen. Jeffrey Newton, Director of the Joint Staff for the Alabama National Guard also attended the rodeo.
