  • Heritage Flight honors last D-Day celebration

    The U.S. Air Force Heritage Flight team conducted a flyover in honor of the 75th anniversary of D-Day and the last celebration at the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, Virginia, June 6, 2019. The four-ship formation included U.S. Air Force Maj. Paul “Loco” Lopez, F-22 Raptor Demonstration Team pilot, Maj. Garret “Toro” Schmitz, F-16 Viper Demonstration Team pilot, Capt. Andrew “Dojo” Olson, F-35 Lighting II Demonstration Team pilot, and Mr. Andrew McKenna, Air Force Heritage Flight Foundation P-51 Mustang pilot.
  • ‘Toro’ grabs Viper Demo by horns

    Gen. Mike Holmes, commander of Air Combat Command, certified Maj. Garret “Toro” Schmitz as a demonstration team pilot following an aerial performance, May 16. Schmitz is tasked with commanding the F-16 Viper Demonstration Team through their 2019 and 2020 seasons as they perform at approximately 40 shows across the world.
  • Honoring our roots: Offutt family returns

    On Aug. 13, 2018, one hundred years, to the day of his passing, generations of Lt. Jarvis Offutt decedents gathered around his grave, white roses in hand. In their company were members of the 55th Wing, who call Offutt Air Force Base home, members of the Royal Air Force 56 Squadron, the unit Lt. Offutt perished serving, and many others who wished to share in honoring his legacy. At the culmination of a wreath laying ceremony by allied countries, 56 Squadron Leader David Hockley, took a minute to recite a stanza from Laurence Binyon’s poem, “For the Fallen.”

  • Heritage Flight: making a connection

    DAVIS-MONTHAN AIR FORCE BASE, Ariz., -- The U.S. Air Force Heritage Flight Training and Certification Course demonstrates the evolution of the USAF's airpower by flying today’s fighter aircraft in formation with World War II, Korean and Vietnam War - era aircraft. The training includes a performance of formations by current USAF fighters such as F-16 Fighting Falcon, F-35 Lightning II, F-22 Raptor and A-10 Thunderbolt II along with historical warbirds like the P-51 Mustang, P-38 Lightning, P-40 Warhawk and F-86 Sabre.
  • Heritage Flight Training Course dazzles DM community

    Davis-Monthan Air Force base hosts the annual Heritage Flight Training course prior to the air show season as a familiarization opportunity for active duty pilots to fly in formation with WWII and Korean-era planes. Each morning prior to the day’s training sorties, the ramp is open to service members, veterans, and their families.

Though he saw his former teammate as if it were only yesterday. Retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Dale Cooke, a former U.S. Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron Thunderbirds pilot from 1979 to 1982, walked into the 2nd Fighter Training Squadron to prepare for something that would go down in the history books.
