Starvation, torture and a 70-mile march to concentration camps or dying in the process were the only options Philippine soldier, the late Ricardo Plana faced after the U.S. surrendered the Bataan Peninsula to the Japanese during World War II. Now, 75 years later, his grandson, U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Max Biser, 23d Security Forces Squadron, traveled to the White Sands Missile Range, N.M., to complete the 26.2-mile Bataan Memorial Death March, March 19.

Four A-29 Super Tucano light-attack aircraft arrived for duty at Kabul Air Wing, Kabul, Afghanistan, March 20, 2017, where they will be used by the Afghan Air Force for close-air attack, air interdiction, escort and armed reconnaissance. The newest A-29s will undergo a brief reconfiguration after which they will be ready for combat operations in the 2017 fighting season.

Moody’s 23d Component Maintenance Squadron’s test cell facility “hush houses” underwent upgrades to improve testing operations in support of the A-10C Thunderbolt II flying mission. A hush house is an enclosed environment that suppresses the sound of engines when tested for serviceability. The construction process for Hush House 1 was completed in four months and received $300,000 worth of upgrades. The under construction Hush House 2 will resemble its counterpart, receiving a $500,000 facelift with an estimated completion time of April 2017. The advantages of the upgrades include centralized storage accessibility, modern lighting and a safer work environment for the facility to test serviceable engines. The improvements to the facilities can be credited to civilian contractors who also provided ongoing support by contributing analysis of failures, component redundancy and upgrades for the test cell’s current and future operational capability requirements to the 23d CMS.

North Carolina’s skies were filled with 4,000 paratroopers across the world during the 19th annual Randy Oler Memorial Operation Toy Drop. Every year, the Fort Bragg, N.C. community begins celebrating the holiday early by inviting their coalition partners to participate in the world’s largest annual multinational airborne exercise and give toys to children in need. U.S. Air Force and Army units worked alongside Canadian, Dutch, Botswanan, Czech, German, Italian, Polish, and Singaporean armed forces to strenghten coalition partnerships and hone airborne capabilities. Paratroopers participated in the event as 120 jumpmasters helped jumpers familiarize themselves with a multitude of aircraft and standardizations, which helped units to forge bonds to lessen cultural barriers.

Default Air Force Logo Moody finalizes DoD initiative
Moody Air Force Base celebrated during a historical ceremony for the transfer of the Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant from a private contractor to Lowndes County, Oct. 3, in Valdosta, Ga. It’s taken three and a half years for this project to come to fruition, but Moody is leading from the front by becoming the first base in the DOD to gain approval for an inter-governmental service agreement with a municipality for a utility. The Department of Defense selected Moody as one of 13 prototype Air Force installations to take part in the public-public, public-private, or P4 initiative. The P4 initiative is used as a tool for maximizing operational effectiveness and minimizing costs.
