HOLLOMAN AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. --

Holloman Air Force Base took the fields, courts and track in full force to celebrate the 49th Wing Sports Day, March 16.

The purpose of the event was to enhance wing-wide pride through performance by bringing the 49th Wing, its mission partners and families together in the spirit of competition. This day of competition also helped foster relationships and enhanced resilience.

“Things are really going to heat up today,” said Col. Houston Cantwell, the 49th Wing commander. “We are entering the cauldron of competition.”

Despite the frosty, 52-degree morning, approximately 500 people surged onto the Sports Day field for a quick safety brief, warm-up exercises and the opening ceremony of Sports Day.

The day’s first event was a 5K run.

Throughout the rest of the day, Sports Day competitors had the chance to tackle more than 15 different individual events from 9-Pin No Tap bowling to singles volleyball and ultimate Frisbee to a tug-of-war.

In the spirit of Holloman Pride, the Sports Day staff even hosted a Squadron Spirit Exhibition so every unit had a platform to strut their stuff.

As Sports Day came to an end, an award ceremony recognized the outstanding people who outperformed the competition throughout the day. The day’s best teams were:

1st place Large Squadron – 49th Civil Engineer Squadron

2nd place Large Squadron – 635th Materiel Maintenance Squadron

3rd place Large Squadron – 49th Logistics Readiness Squadron

1st place Small Squadron – 49th Wing/Wing Staff Agencies

2nd place Small Squadron – 9th Attack Squadron

3rd place Small Squadron – 29th Attack Squadron

Squadron Spirit Exhibit – 49th Medical Group

All in all, the Sports Day 2017 was a success for Holloman’s people, a bolstering of pride and demonstration of outstanding performance for the 49th Wing and its partners.

“This is really a great event for Airmen to come and get into the spirit of competition and demonstrate their unit pride,” said Staff Sgt. Jennifer Faria, a Sports Day project officer. “Overall, this event builds our individual and unit performance through forging of relationships that get built on the field of competition.”
