71st Surveillance Squadron Activation Ceremony
Col. Jared Broddrick, commander of the 71st Surveillance Squadron, gives opening remarks during the squadron’s activation ceremony Aug. 1, 2025. The 71st SURS will be responsible for augmenting the 22nd Surveillance Squadron by providing strategic surge capacity and steady-state mission requirements in support of AFTAC’s global nuclear surveillance mission. The 22nd SURS operates AFTAC’s 24-hour operations center that collects, processes and analyzes information from a global seismic, hydroacoustic, satellite and radio frequency recording network. SMART Scholars ‘get schooled’ on AFTAC

Five students from various colleges and universities across the nation visited the Air Force Technical Applications Center June 26, 2025 as part of the U.S. Air Force’s SMART Scholar Program. SMART, which stands for science and math research transformation, is a comprehensive career development program that offers personalized mentorship and a network of Defense Department professionals to students who are attending an accredited institution of higher learning within the United States.
