Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld announced Mar. 29 the selection of Beale AFB as the Air Forces winner of the 2004 Commander in Chiefs Installation Excellence Award.

The award comes with $1 million for quality-of-life improvements and recognizes the outstanding efforts of the people who operate and maintain Department of Defense installations and who have done the best with their resources to support the mission.

"This is another step Team Beale has taken to show the world we mean business," said Brig. Gen. Rudy Wright, 9th Reconnaissance Wing commander. "From our core units, tenant units to community involvement, it's truly 'One Team, One Fight.'"

The recipients of the presidential award were selected for their exemplary support of Defense Department missions. To be nominated, each base had to show innovative programs that help to create and sustain excellent base operations.

Other 2004 winners are Fort Stewart, Hinesville, Ga.; Marine Corps Air Station, Miramar, San Diego, Calif.; Naval Air Engineering Station, Lakehurst, N.J.; and Defense Supply Center Columbus, Columbus, Ohio

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the award. The winners will be recognized at a ceremony scheduled for May 7, 2004, in the Pentagon center courtyard.
