    The 53rd Wing conducted Black Flag 21-2, the largest Black Flag to date July 13-16, 2021. The three-day large force joint test event occurred included more than 30 Air Force and Navy aircraft.

Shale Norwitz’s duty to protect and serve took precedence. Due to this application of military training and a unique diagnosis, Norwitz safely extracted the occupants of the vehicle, led victims away from the wreckage, and redirected the flow of traffic.
  • 4th CES EOD flight hosts multi-base FTX

    Explosive Ordnance Disposal members from the 4th Civil Engineer Squadron at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, North Carolina hosted and participated in field training exercise Operation Guillotine along with EOD members from Shaw AFB, South Carolina and Andrews AFB, Maryland, July 26 – July 30, 2021. The FTX focused on dismounted, outside the continental United States improvised explosive device operations.

    Reservists in the 419th Operations Support Squadron play a crucial role to ensure the safety of pilots assigned to the 419th Fighter Wing, the Air Force Reserve’s only combat-capable F-35 unit. “We are responsible for maintaining and repairing pilot gear to ensure everything is in proper working condition,” said Staff Sgt. AJ Arteaga, aircrew flight equipment reservist with the 419th OSS. “That also includes their helmet.”

    The 20th Civil Engineering Squadron at Shaw Air Force Base has been awarded the Environmental Restoration, Installation award for its forward leaning approach to environmental restoration. The Department of Defense Environmental Restoration, Installation award recognizes a base’s efforts to protect human health and the environment by cleaning up hazardous substances, pollutants or contaminants and munitions in a timely, cost-efficient, and responsive manner.
