MEDIA CONTEST: Entrapment [Willow Lakes Golf Course series pt. 10] Published Dec. 27, 2006 Series Entry 4J ACC MEDIA CONTEST -- The second half of Offutt's Robert Trent Jones-designed golf course starts with hole #10, and it's a doozy. Rated as the second most difficult hole on the course, this stretch of fairway looks deceptively simple from parking lot. Even the graphic on the right fails to accurately depict just how difficult it is to make par here. To give us a fighting chance, the Air Pulse turned again to Master Sgt. Charlie Callison at the Air Force Weather Agency here on base. Sergeant Callison on hole #10: The 10th hole at Willow Lakes is one of toughest on the course. It's also a very nice looking hole, with plenty of trees and a pleasing fairway. This hole offers plenty of trouble and brings it at a critical time in the round. Gulp down that hot dog you got at the turn and get down to business - you can't afford any distractions here. Sergeant Callison on making par: The two keys to playing this hole are to stay down the left side and don't go over the green. First, you need a drive that puts you in the fairway or down the left side away from the trees that line the right side. If you mess your shot up and end up in the trees on the right, your next shot should be a short and safe one back onto the fairway - don't try and be a hero. Be careful you don't stay too far to the left on your drive. There's a large bunker waiting for golfers who play it too safe. To approach the green consider playing it short, unless you're very confident of your ability to drop the ball exactly on the front of the green. The rear of the green slops drastically away from the pin, and you could end up paying dearly for your shot. If the pin is on the back or left side of the green, you're still better off playing it short. If your ball ends up behind the pin on this one, you're in trouble. Good luck on the back nine. It gets easier from here. [Graphic text] Confined Willow Lakes hole #10 looks deceptively simple in this overhead graphic. After all, the hole is essentially a straight shot, and not all that long for a par 4. Two factors come into play to make this the second hardest hole on the course. First, the fairway narrows dramatically in the middle, forcing golfers to choose between risking the trees on the right, or the large bunker on the left. The real challenge here, however, is at the green. Protected by three bunkers, it also features a dramatic slope that will punish golfers who can't place the ball exactly where they want it. Play it short when reaching for the green, and whatever you do, don't end up behind the pin.
