    Air Force transitions all U.S. military treatment facilities to DHA administration and management

    This October, U.S.-based Air Force military treatment facilities transferred administration and management to the Defense Health Agency. Congress directed this transfer in the fiscal year 2017 National Defense Authorization Act. Establishing an integrated Military Health System will standardize health care delivery and business operations across all military treatment facilities.

    General Mike Holmes, the commander of Air Combat Command, discussed today at the Air Force Association Air, Space and Cyber Conference in National Harbor, Maryland, that Sixteenth Air Force (16th AF) will be the designation for a new Information Warfare (IW) Numbered Air Force (NAF).

  • 557th WW holds first wing operational readiness exercise

    The 557th Weather Wing completed its first operational readiness exercise since standing up as an Air Combat Command wing. Held Aug. 19-23, Operational Readiness Exercise - Steel Colander tested the wing’s ability to deliver weather intelligence in a contested, degraded and operationally-limited environment. “We exercised not only wing capabilities located on Offutt Air Force Base, but also those of our geographically-separated units worldwide, to include all our operational weather squadrons,” said Ted Vroman, a 557th WW Plans and Programs exercise planner. The Air Force Weather Agency, a field operating agency, deactivated in 2015 when the 557th WW stood up. Conversion from a FOA to an operational wing removed many non-operational functions from the organization, leaving the wing an operations-focused entity and in the position to benefit from comprehensive operational readiness exercises.

    Every day, 386th Expeditionary Civil Engineer Squadron electrical systems Airmen meet in the morning to determine their priorities for the day. Some scatter to the flight line, others push across base. Either way, they fulfill requirements that allows Ali Al Salem Air Base to execute its mission.

    Offutt runway closure delayed 10 months

    The 55th Wing’s runway replacement at Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska, has been pushed back from December 2019 to October 2020. The ten-month delay of the runway closure allows for demolition and earthwork to begin before winter and sets up the program to be in the asphalt and concrete work phase by spring 2021.

    DRAGON heads south for summer

    Pilots flew an upgraded E-3 Sentry Airborne Warning and Control System aircraft across the international date line and into the southern hemisphere in late July. The flights prove a $1.05 aircraft billion upgrade, called DRAGON, is worthy of long-haul, international flights and ensures the 40-year-old airframes can continue to operate globally.

    International, technical partnership continues to flourish

    Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization Preparatory Commission executive secretary, Dr. Lassina Zerbo, traveled from his headquarters in Vienna to meet with Air Force Technical Applications Center commander, Col. Chad Hartman, in Florida July 25 to discuss modernization of the National Data Center and how AFTAC’s support to the International Data Center is fundamental to their re-engineering efforts.

    ACC commander holds NAF integration Townhall

    Gen. Mike Holmes, commander of Air Combat Command, held a town hall July 8, 2019, at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas, to discuss the strategic importance of integrating the 24th and 25th Air Forces to form the first information warfare numbered air force. Air Combat Command announced the plans for this reorganization in April of this year as a way to better integrate cyber effects, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance operations, electronic warfare operations and information operations. The synergy between cyber, ISR, EW and IO will increase unity of effort across these capabilities, resulting in new and improved options for combatant commanders.
