    For the first time since it was damaged in the March 2019 flood, the Type III Underground Fuel System became operational here June 16, 2020. The underground fuel system allows personnel to refuel aircraft via an underground constant pressure system that takes it directly from fuel tanks located just south of the flightline.

Gunfighters at Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho, are learning this lesson firsthand. Airmen from the 366th Logistics Readiness Squadron are the first in the Air Force to perform hot-pit refueling on F-35 Lighting II’s with a Type 1 hydrant system from the 1950s and hose cart from the 1970s.

    The fuel line was quickly secured to the bottom of the F-15E Strike Eagle parked on the flight line at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, North Carolina. The Airman looked over at the R-11 aircraft refueling vehicle and gave the member standing by the truck a thumbs-up. The man turned knobs on the control panel while the pressure gauges began to move. Within seconds, the digital display flashed numbers faster than they could be recognized.
